Live on Good Soup and Words

“I live on good soup, not on fine words.” Moliere

Many cultures start the new year by eating lentils or black eye peas, symbols of prosperity and good luck. Here’s my recipe for a Greek style lentil soup to start your new year out right.

Two books are on my reading list this week:
Wabi Sabi For Writers: Find Inspiration. Respect Imperfection. Create Peerless Beauty and
Thanks, But This Isn’t for Us: A (Sort of) Compassionate Guide to Why Your Writing is Being Rejected.

In Wabi Sabi for Writers, Powell writes that there are six traits that writers/artists/creative people should master: “Perseverance, wabi sabi, simplicity, expressiveness, independence and courage.” Studying and writing haiku in the last year has made me a better writer as I look to put into simple words the beauty that surrounds me. In distilling moments into haiku I find that even in writing longer pieces I am searching for a clearer and simpler way to write.

In Thanks, But This Isn’t For Us, writing coach/instructor, editor and author, Jessica Page Morrell of the writing website, Writing Life presents 14 chapters and an inspiring epilogue that may help you get published in 2010. If you keep making the same mistakes and are looking for a professional opinion on what’s not working this book will enlighten your writing mind. Morrell lists additional resources after each chapter and includes a publishing and fiction lingo list.

Lovingly,
The Writing Nag
