A good essay must have this permanent quality about it; it must draw its curtain round us, but it must be a curtain that shuts us in not out.
I am going to put “learn how to write an essay” on my list for 2012 or better yet “write more essays until it doesn’t seem so scary.” I envy people who can write essays…when I sit and face my computer screen and start to type, I feel almost paralyzed by what I think an essay should include. Where do I start? And how should it end? And yes, it seemed a lot easier when I was in grade school and had no expectations of what an essay should be.
