“Writing is making sense of life. You work your whole life and perhaps you’ve made sense of one small area.”
Nadine Gordimer
I guess this quote pertains to the fact that all writers are experts in something and maybe write what you know? My writing mentor always said “write what you want to know not just what you know, writing what you know limits your subject matter”…Good advice. In other words research and keep learning…be a lifetime learner.
I’m getting close to being done with my first packet (approximately 20 pages of writing) and my learning methods are definitely changing, I keep going off in different directions…whatever interests me, this is quite different that traditional college where you learn what they tell you to learn. Studying what interests you and excites you gives you a whole world of learning. The Ode Less Travelled is a wonderful book and I wonder why poetry couldn’t be taught in high school with this kind of book. In high school I thought poetry was so boring and I could never quite figure out what the poet was trying to say. We never talked about metre, or form or just how language sounds. When you learn about language and what you can do with it, it becomes like a game, or at least to me it does.
Lovingly,
