A Wrinkling of the Soul

“Nobody grows old merely by living a number of years.  We grow old by deserting our ideals.  Years may wrinkle the skin, but to give up enthusiasm wrinkles the soul.
Samuel Ullman
In the current book I’m reading  The Power of Slow by Christine Louise Hohlbaum, the author gives sound helpful advice on how to “change the relationship you have with time.” One section that really spoke to me is how often people say they are busy…busy being the new word for “fine” when asked how you are doing. I’m making a conscious effort to avoid using the word busy and slow down and be grateful for the time I do have to work on my creative projects. In 11 chapters, Hohlbaum helped me understand that I need to control my time by saying “no” when I need to, take time-outs when my body is asking for one, rethink my procrastination habits and work on identifying my other bad habits and eliminating the multi-tasking myths that tend to control us. If you are feeling overwhelmed with how little time you have for your creative life this book is definitely worth a read.

In one chapter “Free Time Is Not Expensive. It’s, Well Free!” Hohlbaum suggests writing down ten things that you love to do. After you write your list, “now list the reasons you tell yourself why you cannot do each activity.”  You might find that your reasons for not doing the activity actually set yourself up for failure. By changing your goals to do the activity into “I can” statements you can manage the things you love to do more efficiently.
Today consider doing this exercise. Can you list ten things that you love to do. Are you doing them regularly? How can you add the things you love to do into your life on a regular basis?
Lovingly,
The Writing Nag
