Poetry is a mirror which makes beautiful that which is distorted. ~Percy Shelley, A Defense of Poetry, 1821
New books I’m reading this week, Best American Poets of 2008, and Poets on Prozac-Mental Illness, Treatment and the Creative Process, a book of essays by poets and their personal struggles with depression, anxiety disorders and other mental health issues.
Today using this quote as a jumping off point try writing a poem about something you consider ugly but make the reader fall in love with it if this seems too difficult look into the mirror and write a piece of prose about yourself, pretend this is the first time you have seen this face…what would you say? are you able to write accurately about your face in the mirror? …Now get back to work!

A concept I must explore. My own face is largely forgettable. But I’ll think about it.
